reflection #4...wow, already
I'm kind of excited for the semester projects now. I originally thought that I might want to volunteer at the Redwood Gospel's Food Bank, because I've always wanted to, but just have never physically gotten there. Then I changed my mind. There is a program called Girl's on the Run which provides mentorship between older female runners and girls from low opportunity situations or those who just want to get out and run. I thought it would be great to build relationships with the girls in the program, through being a mentor, and learn how running has changed/influenced their lives. I know how much running has shaped my life and thought that volunteering for something that was helping others as well learning their stories would be a blessing. Then I remembered the limited time I have; fitting in several hours a week would be just a little too much. So, the final idea came up in conversation with Joe M. while the table groups were sharing ideas. We saw that there was a problem: so many people just throw away their old running shoes and they are a large contributor to landfills; especially when you think of people like me who go through a pair about every three months. There are solutions to throwing shoes away in the garbage but people just don't know about them. So, Joe M. and I were thinking about sharing the alternatives to throwing shoes away and then putting a collection drive together. Here is a link to one alternative to throwing your old althetic shoes away: http://www.soles4souls.org/about/locations.cgi?zip=94931

I'm glad you came up with an idea and included me in it haha. But honestly, I really like the idea of having shoe donations, even though I talk like it didn't do anything for me, I would definitely say that my time running cross country made me a much better person. I'm all for giving others the opportunity to see just how far they can push themselves through a healthy outlet such as running.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that we could split which charities the shoes end up at as well, so we're diversifying things a little bit. Thoughts on this matter?
Dude. Thats a pretty good idea; so many people (myself included) are unaware of those options. It would definately be enlightening. Also, it would be cool if you focused on the statistics of shoe production, lifetime, and consumption in a pretty graph or something. I dunno. I just really like graphs.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for this project! I think you did an excellent job of pulling a large topic in, but you also stuck with a topic that I can tell you feel passionate about. While your project will be local, it really made me think globally. How many people in our world don't have shoes while I have 10+ pair?
